Solar Power
SmartStop continues to roll out solar-powered panels at our facilities across the U.S. As of December 31, 2022, we have invested more than $10.8M in solar energy, resulting in a projected reduction of more than 7.9 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. We ended 2022 with 33 self-storage sites equipped with solar panels and another six locations fully installed and waiting on permitting. Our use of solar panels sustainably and reliably reduces our dependence on the electric grid.
Energy Efficient Lighting
Energy-efficient LED and motion-sensing lighting are used at most of our locations and our corporate office. Our team expects to adopt the use of LED lighting throughout our entire portfolio by the end of 2023.
Water Conservation
As one of our most precious natural resources, we are committed to minimizing landscape water use at our water-sensitive locations. We employ xeriscaping (landscaping designed to reduce or eliminate the need for water) at many of our properties.
LEED Certified Construction
Our SmartStop corporate office is a Gold-certified LEED building with electric vehicle charging stations, LED and motion-controlled lighting and renewable solar energy. You can learn more about LEED Building Principles from the U.S. Green Building Council.
