Solar Power

SmartStop continues to roll out solar-powered panels at our facilities across the U.S. As of September 30, 2024, we have invested more than $12.7M in solar energy, resulting in a projected reduction of more than 8.7 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. We ended Q3 of 2024 with 65 self-storage sites equipped with solar panels and another 12 locations fully installed under development. Our use of solar panels sustainably and reliably reduces our dependence on the electric grid.

Energy Efficient Lighting

Energy-efficient LED lighting is used in all our locations and motion-sensing lighting is used at more than 75% of our stores. LEDs use up to 75% less energy than traditional incandescent or fluorescent lighting and contain no mercury, unlike fluorescent lights, making them more environmentally friendly.

Water Conservation

As one of our most precious natural resources, we are committed to minimizing landscape water use at our water-sensitive locations. We employ xeriscaping (landscaping designed to reduce or eliminate the need for water) at many of our properties.
